Response to Unsubstantiated Reports About Korey Stringer's Use of Ephedra
Statement from The Ephedra Education Council
Washington, DC (November 19, 2001) In response to recent unsubstantiated reports about Korey Stringer and his use of the dietary supplement Ephedra, the Ephedra Education Council released the following statement today:
"While our most deepest sympathies go to the family and friends of Korey Stringer, unsubstantiated reports have been made about his use of the dietary supplement products that contain Ephedra. These reports are based on speculation by unidentified individuals and deserve no merit. There is no medical confirmation that Ephedra was in Stringer's system and even if Ephedra were found in his system, clinical research would rule out Ephedra as a cause of death unless his consumption levels were far above the maximum recommended servings for Ephedra products.
"The popular dietary supplement Ephedra, used by more than 12 million American consumers, has been confirmed to be safe and effective when consumed and used as directed. Clinical research and scientific evidence continues to support its safety. Conservative estimates indicate that more than three billion servings of Ephedra products are consumed each year. Millions of Americans are truly benefiting from these products by losing weight, improving their self-esteem and leading healthier lives."
